Scott Born and the other folks at Behavior Research Co. have gone to some work to digitize some very interesting lectures by the late [|Dr. Ogden R. Lindsley, the father of Precision Teaching.
From the Behavior Research Co. website:
Ogden Lindsley's 1969 Short Course Podcasts
"...this is the audio from the very first "Short Course," at the Plaza Inn in Kansas City, 09-Jun-1969..."
Index of all segments of the 1969 Short Course
(Descriptions are authored by the folks at BRCo and also listed at their website.)
1969 Short Course Reel #1
NEW 5/3/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #1. Regina Claypool-Frey
"Reel # 1 of the 1969 Short Course is the only reel for which Ogden left notes. The notes indicate that each section was to be 5 minutes long, with two sections recorded per tape.
Reel #1 indicates the titles for the first section's subsections as PBM TOOLS, BEH CHART, COUNTERS, TIMERS, 4 STEPS, BPA, and BEH BANK.
The second section is listed as 4 STEPS TO SUCCESS.
Of particular interest in this recording is the suggestion that the Standard Behavior Chart was initially considered to have a minor role in behavior management; the impact of charting was a surprise."
1969 Short Course Reel #2
NEW 5/3/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #2. Regina Claypool-Frey
"Reel # 2 contains only one 5 minute section. In the beginning, you can hear Ogden expressing frustration about the technology with which he is working for the Short Course; this is a theme that anyone who has worked with Ogden has encountered many times!"
1969 Short Course Reel #3
NEW 5/3/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #3. Regina Claypool-Frey
"Two Five-minute sections. Ogden discusses the principles of his Precise Behavioral Management system including his catch phrase "The child knows best," derived from a paraphrase of Skinner."
"A "student in the coat closet" example is given to describe valuable instructional time lost. Ogden explains how a large refrigerator box called the "Sunday Box"can do wonders to clean up American homes by slicing up a natural consequence. The Sunday Box would go on to be one of the earliest mass-marketed Applied Behavior Analysis interventions. "
1969 Short Course Reel #4
NEW 5/3/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #4. Regina Claypool-Frey
"One five-minute section. Ogden explains principles that apply to the first step: Pinpointing. He demonstrates a complete "movement cycle" by tantruming loudly at different durations (careful listening to this while driving) and introduces the Dead Man's Test by hollering aloud and declaring, "The dead don't do that!!!""
1969 Short Course Reel #5
NEW 5/3/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #5. Regina Claypool-Frey
"A definition and examples of the Dead Man Test are given. Ogden discusses principles borrowed from Maria Montessori’s methods as well as the consequences of “pussy footing” when implementing interventions designed to decelerate behavior."
1969 Short Course Reel #6
NEW 5/6/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #6. Regina Claypool-Frey
"Ogden discusses the advantages of rate as a behavior measure that all things will have in common. He stresses, “use curriculum to record curriculum“ and introduces chart conventions called record floor and record ceiling."
1969 Short Course Reel #7
NEW 5/6/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #7. Regina Claypool-Frey
Descriptions of the Record Floor
"Ogden continues discussion of the record floor, which is described as “very beautiful” concept. For the first time in the series of episodes he fields questions, commentary and corrections from listeners in the room! He gives explanations of chasing the behavior below the record floor and discusses the uphill fight of teachers who are expected to decrease behavior outside of the confinements of their classroom environment."
1969 Short Course Reel #8
NEW 5/6/08 Annotated transcript of Reel #8. Regina Claypool-Frey
"Sally, a precision teacher of orthopedic handicapped children, presents a variety of charts from her classroom. She uses child managers in the classroom and in the home. Intervention outcomes are described as successful. However, the presentation is difficult to follow without visual displays.
